About

STEM after school at Wood Acres

Winter 2017

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program offering our classes in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). Student to adult ratio of 7:1 or better for most classes.

For full descriptions, photos and reviews of our classes and birthday parties, see our website: http://thegreatadventurelab.com.

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Room numbers TBD. Instructor will send welcome email several days before class.

These activities are not sponsored by, associated with, or endorsed by MCPS or Montgomery County Government.

We strongly recommend previous Lego robotics experience for younger students, though it is not required.

Areas of Exploration: Programming, Robotics, Logic, Mechanical Engineering.

Class Format: Seven 90-minute meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $200 per student; min 9 / max 10 students. 2 instructors, no aide.

Intro to Video Game Programming A and B are separate classes with totally different projects. Take one or both in any order, but don’t repeat either class.

With MIT’s Scratch Jr., we’ll learn how to program basic video games on iPads (provided by The GrAd Lab!) Kids will have a blast learning how to make their characters move, talk, and interact.

Areas of Exploration: Programming, Multimedia, Storytelling, Music, Logic.

Class Format: Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $150 per student plus $5 materials fee per student; min 11 / max 12 students, 1 instructor, 1 aide.

We’ll build seesaws, spinning tops, and other cool machines!

Areas of Exploration: Simple Machines, Physics.

Class Format:  Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $125 per student; min 11 / max 14 students, 1 instructor, 1 aide.  Parent aide for full class gets free tuition.
